Holy Name Thrift Store Story
Holy Name Thrift Shop started up about 60 years ago. It was started up by CCW (Council of Catholic Women). These ladies wanted to help the people of Sheridan County by providing them with a place they could come and shop. A place where they could purchase (or have free) used clothing for their families. It became their Mission! The old house that is soon to be torn down, has been the Thrift Shops’ home for more than 50 of those years! As their success grew, it became obvious that they had outgrown the small amount of space that the old house offered. Thus, the metal building, erected next to them became space where they could grow their Mission even more! It was built in 1995. Today, 60 years later, we still operate out of these two buildings!
VOLUNTEERS 1.We are more than a Thrift Shop...we are a Mission of Holy Name Catholic Church. In fact, we are the only Mission of the church that reaches out to the whole community. We provide services to anyone who enters our doors. 2.We are all volunteers, 30-some strong, and no one is paid. 3.We are told from our customers that we are the “Best Thrift Store in town!” Why? Because our prices are the lowest in town, our volunteers are friendly, and because of our willingness to help people, groups or businesses in any way we can. 4.Besides our Mission of being there for the community, we also generate up to $80,000 a year! This money is passed on to Holy Name Church to be used as needed, for the upkeep of our Church and faith community. 5.We’ve also outgrown this little house. We need more space! About 50% of our donations are sitting in our storage sheds. Our new addition has more than twice the retail space we now have. With that said, we are so excited, as with that extra space we can have less in storage and more out for our customers to buy. A win for everyone!
OUR NEED Our need is a new building! This old house has served us well, but as with all things, it has reached the state where no amount of repairs are going to make it suitable to keep operating out of. Following are the facts about the state of the old house: 1.The floors are falling in. The ceiling is peeling off. The front porch is pulling away from the building. 2.It has mildew and mold and thus an odor that we can’t get rid of. 3.The walls are cracked; plaster is falling off. 4.The roof leaks into the attic...and sometimes into the building itself. 5.The sump pump in the basement can’t keep up with the rain, and runs over. 6.There hasn’t been water in the building for about 20 years. Volunteers must go next door, no matter the weather to use that bathroom. 7.The furnace went out last winter and took 3 weeks to find a part, as it is so old. They said that it probably could not be repaired again.
